Let me starts this review by saying this is book 2 in the series, Light in the Dark. I did not know it when I signed up for the book as an ARC, but I was able to read it as a standalone. Maybe the first book may have helped, but I had no problems following the story.
This is not my first time reading Micalea Smeltzer, in fact I have fallen deeply in love with the books I have read. When I saw this ARC I had to have it, as of course I am in love with her writing. Unfortunately I feel this book fell a little short of my past heartthrobs by this author. I spent a lot of time thinking about it as I was reading away, and the only thing I can come up with is the books I have read by her have smart ass men who love to show their soft side. In When Stars Collide our male lead Xander did not have a cocky side to him, just an overall good guy. Now Thea on the other hand; our female lead, she is a smart ass spitfire who is not afraid to show her crazy side.
This is a sister falling for with brothers best friend love story with a HEA and alternating POV between Thea and Xander. I liked the characters in this story, but I felt like they were missing some deep emotion, and history of the characters. I felt like we did not get to really understand the true depth of the characters and what they shared, compared to the author’s other stories. Xander had known what he wanted from the beginning between him and Thea, as was not afraid to let Thea know. Thea had her reservations, and Xander the great guy he is, stuck by her and respected her wishes, well until she finally let her guard down. I do recommend this book as I always enjoy Micalea’s writing, and I still found myself on amazon after I finished one clicking the first book in the series.
